A new Experience in Riding - Sidecar

In December 2010 I attended the Sidecar/Trike Education Program course to learn how to ride a bike with a sidecar (commonly called a "Rig"). Then later in December I found a used sidecar, a Motorvation Spyder T1. Long story short my buddy and I went to look at it and we ended up loading it on a trailer and bringing it home.

So in mid-January I got all the parts needed to attach it to my motorcycle and started the process. Now because of my damaged left leg (which is why I need three wheels instead of riding two wheels) I could only work on it a little at a time, what should have taken 4 or 5 hours took over seven days to do the work. I had to attach a sub-frame to my bike to mount the sidecar to.

Now comes the time to mount the sidecar.

Now that I got this far down the line. I got my measurements down (I think and set the toe-in and lean-in) set. Total width and the amount the sidecar axle is forward of the rear wheel axle from what I understand the correct amount. Now it is time to tighten everything up and see how it works.

The finished pictures are looking good.

Sep 24-26, 2010 CMA 5 Chapter Campout at Tator Park

Well here are a few pictures from the CMA 5 Chapter Campout. It was a blast and I overheard several people state that they wanted to do it again. In this picture is Pat Hoffman and Lin & Jeannie Eckhardt.
A fine group of CMA members sitting around and talking, there was a lot of interaction between the members of different chapters.

This is some of our Sunday Morning Kitchen crew. And only some. The New Life Riders Chapter provided the breakfast for both Saturday and Sunday. The Koob's and Zimmer's did a fantastic job on breakfast tacos.

2010 CMA Run For The Son

Well, Saturday, May 1st, it's CMA's Run For the Son. Paula and I left for Fredericksburg, TX at 9 a.m. we were to meet at least five CMA chapters at the court house square in Fredericksburg by noon. We were the first ones at the square so we were able to observe all the bikes arriving - what a sight. Two south TX chapters and three north TX chapters, over 75 people in a circle around the fountain praying. WOW. What a blessing. Of course Run For the Son, CMA's only fundraiser each year, is supposed to be a one hundred mile motorcycle run. Paula and I put 185 miles on the truck (sorry my physical condition is not up to riding yet) and got home at 3 p.m. It was a great time fellowshipping with CMA people from all around the area. So far Paula and I have raised $1,500.00 for Run for the Son. Praise the Lord.

I was blessed yesterday to have a very good friend stop by to see my wife and I. It is always good to see friends and having a time to catch up with each other and pray for one another is such a blessing.

After some time away (over 2 years) where I've been too occupied with other things to get onto this blog, I've returned. There have been many changes in my life since the last post. My bride and I are still involved with the Christian Motorcyclists Association. We have been appointed as NE TX Area Representatives of this organization (in February 2010) and that has been a blessing to us. I've been recuperating from a severe fall (Oct 2009) and am in Physical Therapy at this time. God is still in charge and I am not!!

FAMILY

First of all, if you did not attend the Texas State CMA Rally (18-20 May), you really missed several blessings (the Word preached was awesome, the singing talents and anointing of the music, just to mention a couple). Paula and I did not arrive until about 5 p.m. on Saturday the 19th due to our daughter's college graduation (she received her Masters in Business Administration/Accounting and YES, we are proud parents). But by Friday afternoon, (via phone calls) I was learning more about CMA and the New Life Riders being family to one of our members.

As you know, Chaplain Phil's health isn't the greatest. Friday afternoon, when he arrived at the rally, he was experiencing extremely severe back cramps. Our State Coordinator, Johnny Upton, took him to the hospital in Whitney. Johnny called me and I contacted Road Capt. Jack and Secretary Janice. Both were ready and willing to do what ever they could to help - and they did in many ways. Our Area Reps, Don and Susan also helped. The hospital released him late Friday afternoon but by Friday night, Phil was vomiting and still in severe pain. So Don and Capt. Jack transported him back to the hospital and waited until he was admitted. They didn't get back to the rally grounds until the early hours of Saturday morning.

Okay, the hospital took care of Phil and gave him some meds for the nausea and to releive the pain so he could get some sleep. When he was released again on Saturday afternoon, Don and Jack again went up and got him and transported him back to the rally. While at the rally, many CMA members made sure Phil was taken care of and some of them were not from our chapter, but that didn't stop them. Another CMAer from south Texas offered to load Phil’s bike and sidecar up on his trailer and take it and Phil home but Phil’s bike was too low to the ground to load onto the trailer. So I rode the bike/sidecar back to the Austin area with Phil keeping Paula company in the truck. Phil got home safely and is doing much better now.

I said all of this to say how PROUD I am of all who helped or were willing to help and how BLESSED I am. This is what family is all about. It doesn't matter if the person helping was a New Life Rider or a CMAer from another chapter or area. The GOAL was to help and as CMA's banner proclaims: "HERE IF YOU NEED US" -- that also applies to our own members as well.

In John 13:35, it says “By this all men will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another.”

THE CALLING

All Christians are called.

We are called first to be Christians. When we give our lives to the Lord, we are answering a call that goes back to the Garden of Eden. I am reminded of a Don Francisco song “Adam Where Are You”, where God enters the garden after man has sinned and is calling out to Adam, looking for him. I believe God knew where he was but wanted Adam to respond. We responded to that call when we accepted Jesus’ sacrifice on our behalf.

We are then called to mature. The book of Corinthians speaks of going from milk to meat. A newborn cannot eat meat, they first are fed milk until they grow enough to be able to eat, first strained food then progressively more adult food. Remember, we need to nurture the new Christians in our midst and help educate them in the Way, just as we do with our children.

We are then called to carry the gospel. Once we have matured, we have the command to carry the gospel (the good news of salvation through Jesus Christ) first to Jerusalem (our immediate town/local) then to Judea (the region surrounding our town, could be state or nation) then to the outermost reaches of the earth (now that may not seem as far today as it did in Jesus’ time due to our advances in modes of travel, but it still can be a long way from home). If the apostles of Jesus’ time could turn the world upside down (not their words but a non-believer’s), it is mind boggling to wonder what can and is being done today.

Not all are called to motorcycle ministry (or any specific ministry for that matter) but if you are called, then you have a responsibility: Not to any man but to the creator of all men. Not all are active with even a specific club or group, but I firmly believe every CMA’er is called to do something. It may be with your friends that you ride with all the time and have for years. It may be praying for those who go out regularly to carry the gospel to others (in this way you are sharing the load).

The bottom line is YOU are CALLED. The rest is between you and your God.

WHAT’S YOUR PART?

The last few months, I have been attempting to set the stage for all of us to look at what our functions are in the Body of Christ and in CMA, specifically New Life Riders. Now is the time for the hard questions.

My part, right now, in CMA and New Life Riders, is to be as good a chapter President as I can be. As I mentioned in last month’s article, we all have a part. Parts that pray, parts that go to events locally and/or away, parts that go to prisons, parts that open their homes for fellowship, parts that keep records, parts that evangelize, and on and on. This chapter would not function if all tried to be presidents, road captains, etc. Nor can we be effective by simply being patch holding members doing nothing. As your president, I am to provide overall guidance and opportunities for ministry, recreation, and fellowship. I hope you feel that I am fulfilling my obligations to you in those ways. If not, please feel free to talk to me about what you would like to see happen in this chapter.

Your chapter officers are trying to take the steps necessary to provide a place for you to function in the ministry of New Life Riders. We have encouraged having prayer partners and are trying to set up a prayer warrior team. We have a hospitality tent ministry, fellowship times, rides just for fun and to motorcycling events, and ministry training nights. All of these provide ministry opportunities.

Your part: Now that is up to YOU. If you feel that you are a prayer warrior, hook up with Chaplain Phil. Hospitality is your cup of tea, check with Paula and me. Prison ministry, there are several options available to you from local youth facilities to Champions for Life. Road Captain Jack is working with Champions for Life. Janice, our Secretary, is involved in working with the youth at the Travis County Youth Detention Facility with Bill Bronson, another one of our members. You can talk to any one of these people to find out how you can become involved.

Involvement is the key ingredient. Without it, nothing will happen. This chapter will be what YOU want it to be. The officers can only provide the opportunities. It’s up to YOU to take advantage of them and be INVOLVED.

EACH PART A SPECIAL FUNCTION

I’m borrowing the title for my article from CMA’s 2007 Seasons of Refreshing theme. Paula and I, and a few other New Life Riders, recently attended the NE TX Seasons. It was a blessed time of instruction, worship, fellowship and refreshing in preparation for the coming year. If you missed it, you missed a wonderful time. But…

We got to say farewell to Curtis and Carol Clements as our previous S. Central Regional Evangelist. They are stepping up to a position with National CMA overseeing all regional evangelists and expanding CMA internationally.

We met Kerry Gibson (his wife, Debbie was unable to attend), who is our new Regional Evangelist. The Gibsons are out of Jackson, MS and he really stepped up to the plate and hit a home run, in my mind, at this year’s Seasons. You will get another chance to meet them at the TX State CMA Rally in May.

The theme EACH PART A SPECIAL FUNCTION comes from Romans 12:4. “Just as our bodies have many parts and each part has a special function so it is with Christ’s Body.” The “Golden Truth” of Season’s was to remind CMA members of the following truths:

1. As a member of CMA and a part in the body of Christ, we each have a special God-designed function.

2. As parts of the same body, we all have different works to do, yet each of us needs each other.

3. Prayer, Fellowship, Evangelism, and Discipleship are important functions that are critical in the body of Christ and in the development of a healthy CMA chapter.

4. As a member of a local CMA chapter, I must determine what of the four key functions I fit into within my chapter.

There are actions being taken within this chapter to strengthen and grow. The prayer-partner idea introduced in the February news letter and at the chapter meeting, the new people Get Acquainted opportunity on the third Thursday, and the Ministry Training opportunity on the fourth Thursday are other opportunities we would like all of you to participate in one way or another. There will be other opportunities, such as that mentioned in Chaplain Phil’s article in this newsletter, to help you find your place in this special part of the Body of Christ, the New Life Riders chapter. I hope YOU become a living, intricate, functioning part in this ministry.

Oh, remember that “But…” in the first paragraph? The chapter purchased the CD’s that the hosting church made of Kerry presenting the Seasons of Refreshing. I encourage all of you to listen to them. We’ve made extra copies for this purpose! Contact Paula or myself to arrange when you can borrow the CD’s.

Paula's Prayer Partnering Article for Feburary '07' Newsletter

PRAYER PARTNERING

Thinking of a way to build up one another and to more effectively pray for one another… Randy and I were tossing it around after the officers meeting this past Thursday evening… and this idea came up:

Each member of the chapter should ask one other person to be their prayer partner. Women ask women and men ask men. If you are married, you should definitely be praying for one another but this is above and beyond that so married couples need to do this with others in the chapter as well. If anyone has already asked you to be their prayer partner and you said yes and someone else asks you to be theirs, you can still say yes. You may have only one prayer partner or you might have 2 or more. The idea is that those who agree to be one another’s prayer partners will do this:

1) Be willing to be accountable to one another. Such as asking for prayer for problem areas in your life and expecting your prayer partner to ask you how you are doing in that area from time to time since they WILL be praying for you specifically in that area.

2) Pray specifically for one another when you will be going to events to witness, even if you are both there, you will be praying specifically for one another.

3) This would be someone you would call to pray for you directly when you get sick or perhaps some other distress in your life.

4) I think you get the idea…

The idea is that you would build a close relationship with this prayer partner that would be a combination uplifting, encouraging, accountability, mentoring, and discipleship type relationship.

James 5:16 “Therefore, confess your sins to one another, and pray for one another, so that you may be healed. The effective prayer of a righteous man can accomplish much.”

THE CMA BACK PATCH

The CMA logo worn as a patch on our backs is called a 'back patch' (also called 'colors') in the motorcycling world. There are a few things to remember about the CMA back patch. One is that it is a registered trademark. It can only be worn by CMAer's who have completed the ministry team program or who were members prior to the date when the requirement to complete a ministry team training was added (early 1990's). It should not have any territorial rockers (city, state, chapter, etc.) but it can have a rocker with your name, CMA nationally appointed position, ministry team and ministry team year on them (CMA Handbook page I-5). If you choose to wear an American flag on your vest, it must be on the left side of the vest with the star field closest to your heart, with no other patches or pins above it. Remember you are representing CMA when you are wearing their back patch so do so with integrity.

Anyone who practices, by word or deed, anything that would discredit the testimony of Jesus Christ or the ministry of CMA will be asked to remove their CMA back patch. If a member is asked to remove or return their back patch, no reimbursement should be expected, nor given by CMA or its affiliates. (CMA Handbook page I-5).

There is more information in the CMA Handbook about representing CMA with integrity. If you are not familiar with it, I would suggest you take some time to read the CMA Handbook, Revision #1, dated 01/06. If you don't have one, Paula and I have a copy at the meetings or you can contact me and I can get you the PDF file.

At the January officers meeting, we were discussing the need for prayer support for one another within the chapter. Paula and I were discussing this further and she described a system/model that I think is very workable and appropriate for us to adopt. So I asked her to put it down in writing. When she did, I thought it best to just publish her idea. So it is in this issue - I would like everyone to have at least one prayer partner. We will only be effective as we grow in Christ and in following His ways. One of the main ways we do this is by prayer.

WHAT HAVE I GOTTEN MYSELF INTO?

First of all, I'd like to thank all of you for your vote of confidence in me by electing me as your President for 2007. I hope to serve you well. If you have any ideas for the chapter, please feel free to bring your ideas to my attention or to attend a Chapter Officer's meeting and bring them up there. Chapter Officers meetings are open to all chapter members.

As to my question at the start - it's not about my position as president, although it could be. But I thought that all of us might be asking that of ourselves once in a while about our involvement in the Christian Motorcyclists Association (CMA).

So I thought we could use a reminder about what CMA is and its purpose. CMA is a non-denominational (meaning - an organization that have not formally aligned itself with an established denomination, evangelical (emphasizing personal conversion and the authority of the Bible), non-profit (not in business to make money) organization with the purpose of reaching people in the highways and byways of life with the gospel (good news) of Jesus Christ and His salvation for all mankind.

CMA is primarily an evangelistic organization. Having chapter socials and rides is an added benefit but not a priority item. Paula and I have been praying and discussing what God would have us do as leaders for the coming year. One item is that we need to grow. Current chapter members (that's you and me) need to continually grow in our spiritual lives. The chapter also needs to grow in numbers so that we have enough people to effectively minister in our area (Austin and the surrounding communities). We all will get burned out if only a few do most of the ‘work’.

In order to work toward these goals, Paula and I, as well as the other officers of this chapter, will start having a visitor information/fellowship time on the third Thursday of each month at our home starting as 7 p.m. Chapter members are also invited to come to meet and fellowship with visitors to our chapter. To help us grow spiritually and have a better understanding of CMA ministry, there will be a ministry training session on the fourth Thursday of the month, again at our home at 7 p.m. This is open to chapter members and those who have decided they want to take the next step in becoming a member of our local chapter. PLEASE, let us know if you plan on attending so we can prepare for the number that will be here, THANK YOU!

Paula and I, as well as our other chapter officers, are committed to helping you and our chapter grow. It is only as we grow in Christ that we can realize the potential that we (individually and as a chapter) can attain. Please be in prayer for your officers, the chapter, and our visitors as we pursue these new activities.

TAYLOR JAYCEE'S 1ST ANNUAL BIKE & SNAKE SHOW

The weekend of September 29th to October 1st was the time frame for the Taylor Jaycee's 1st Annual Bike and Snake Show. Since it was the first year for the event at the J. Lorraine Ghost Town (east of Manor, TX) attendance was low but not bad at all for a first time event.

Approximately 100 people were there to enjoy the music (some really good local bands) and the bike and snake shows. Next year maybe there will be as many bikes in the bike show as there were snakes in the pit. Both shows were good and the Jaycee's as usual displayed their proficiency in snake handling as well as informative tips on snakes and their behavior and ours in relationship to the snakes. For me that means - I'll just stay clear.

The bike games were going along nicely until one of our members encountered the effects of gravity and physics at the same time - only minor injuries were sustained and the bike didn't fare too bad either.

Sunday morning dawned with an overcast sky and high humidity, where there had been a fair number of people Saturday night there were only eighteen people on the grounds. Twelve people attended the service put on by yours truly with the assistance of Don Potter (on harmonica and guitar) and the New Life Riders.

CHARIOTS OF THE HILLS - 10TH ANNIVERSARY PARTY

September 16 was a beautiful day - even if it did look a little like rain at the start (we really need rain, and at this point I'd even ride in the rain just to have some on the ground).

We were suprised by the Witten's, Dave & Karen who showed up about thirty minutes before the published departure time. Dave and Karen, who currently live in Oklahoma, were New Life Riders when Paula and I arrived in Austin in '97', Dave was the Road Captain for the Chapter also. They receive the newsletter and since they were here when the Chariots of the Hills split off of the New Life Riders they decided to go to the party with us. A sight for sore eyes, it was good to see them and ride with them again.

We did pretty good until one of our members picked up a 16 penny nail in his rear tire going through Burnett, TX. Thankfully my sweet wife was driving the chase truck and after we all got back together we loaded up Johnny's bike in the back of the truck for the trip to Llano and the party. Johnny thought he would be confined to the truck for the return trip also, but thanks to Mike Steelman of the Chariots of the Hills and his shop (plus a used and punctured tube he had - that was better than the one that was in Johnnys tire) he was able to ride his bike home. He still needs a new tire and tube (as well as a chain) but he'll be able to do that easier at home.

The Chariots of the Hills members, new and old, welcomed all visitors and provided an excellent assortment of foods so that no one could leave hungry and I believe they still had some brisket left over after the party. Bike games and other games were also provided for our participation and entertainment. I'll be adding some pictures - especially of the tire repair situation at a later date. Don Potter won the slow race and regretfully I cannot remember the winners of the other events. But everyone had fun.

RIDIN' WITH RANDY

Hi Folks,

Well at the time of writing this the Warriors of the Way Dart Run and the Chariots of the Hills 10th Anniversary party are history. between the two events I was able to ride approximately 400 miles or more. First lady, Paula, was able to use the chase vehicle for the purpose to which it was intended (check my blog for pictures) with a bike in the back (flat tire) and the rider in the truck for the rest of the run to our destination. God provided the means for repair of the tube (actually another tube with only three patches on it) to get the operator home. Come to the next meeting to see what happens next in this interesting story.

The WOW Dart Run raised almost $800.00 for the Killeen Crisis Pregnancy Center, they provided good food, coffee and cold drinks as needed and Kay's Motorcycle Mania was very supportive of this event.

The Chariots of the Hills 10th Anniversary party was well attended including Captain Dave and Karen Witten (ex-NLR members who were a part of NLR when the Chariots were commissioned to start their own chapter) I was really blessed to see them at my house early and with a full fuel tank (Captain Dave was always good about that when he was Road Captain for NLR). Don and Susan Potter also accompanied us as well as Tom & Debbie, Janice and Johnny. Don won the slow race, I placed second and Dick Pitre placed third. The brisket was delicious an the BBQ sauce was home made - whew!

There are many things coming up and I'm not even talking toy runs yet! Uppermost, though, are the nominations for chapter officers for 2007. Is God asking you to serve? Prayerful consider your role in the New Life Riders, are you where God wants you to be?

WOW DART RUN

Tom Zimmer, our Chapter President, taking his turn throwing darts at the Warriors of the Way (CMA) Dart Run. We really appreciated the WOW chapter members (like Ken & Lynette Higgins pictured here) for putting this run on. Just over one hundred miles of beautiful scenery, good fellowship with those on the run and at the start/stop point, Kay's Motorcycle Mania, in Nolanville.

I thank the Warriors of the Way for putting on a good run. All the ingredients were there including food - which for CMA is almost a necessity. I don't know how many people showed up for the run but I noticed several clubs being represented. At the end of the day almost $800.00 was given to the charity they supported.

Interesting thought, as at this time, we have had several over 100 degree F. days. I hope everyone is drinking plenty of water and watching for signs of heat exhaustion or heat stroke. Please take care of yourselves!

In light of the high temps, our July and August Chapter rides have been early morning rides. The September chapter ride will be to the 10th Anniversary of the Chariots of the Hills CMA Chapter. This chapter came out of our chapter and has been doing well, so let's get together and ride out to Pat & Buren Hoffman's to help our friends celebrate this occasion!

August 26th New Life Riders Chapter Ride

Well Folks,

Chrome, steel, leather, and a beautiful day. It doesn't get much better than this.
Today was a good day to ride. We had fifteen people, some of which were vistors, thirteen motorcycles and one truck (which my beautiful bride drove as a chase vehicle).

I'm giving the pre-ride briefing to those that showed up. We actually had more visitors than we had chapter members on this run. For our members who didn't show up , boy did you miss a good one! One hundred and seventy-five miles from my door to my door and it was all fun. Then the fellowship with everyone there - WOW!

Here's the crew we took off with from our meeting place at the 'Y' at Oak Hill. A finer bunch of people to ride with today would be impossible to find. We left the 'Y' at Oak Hill and took the back roads to Blanco, TX - BEAUTIFUL.

At Blanco we stopped for brunch (well to be truthfull we stopped at Riley's BBQ first but they didn't open till 11 a.m. and we were there at 9:50 a.m.) so we went catty-corner across the square to the Sunset Resturant. The folks there were great - got our group all together and Talk about the food. If you leave there hungry - you didn't order anything! Ask Paula and I about the "Challenge" of eating just three of their pancakes.

After the meal, our group split up - some people had less time to play than others. And eight of us (seven bikes and one truck) went to Heritage Days at Vett Park just south of Blanco. Civil war reinactments, cannon firing, muskets firing, people falling down, ladies in hoop skirts, blacksmith, chuckwagons (at least nine) plus a lot of other tings to see, purchase, check out etc. We left before the rodeo and bands started. But it seems Blanco's Heritage days are worth checking out. I sure had fun.

I'll upload the pictures of the Cannon Firing once I get them from the young photographer who took the pictures after our President, Tom Zimmer left us to go home and spend some time with his wife who recently returned from California after spending time with the kids (more likely grandkids).

RIDIN' WITH RANDY

Hi Folks,

Well, as I'm writing this, the July chapter breakfast ride is history. For the dozen of us that attended it, I think every one enjoyed it. I got to know Don and Vonda a bit better and so did Bill. We didn't get to sit together as a large group. So we had three different conversation groups at the Blue Bonnett Cafe in Marble Falls. That place has grown so much in just the short time I've been in this area, yet they still provide a home town atmosphere with home style cookin' - can't beat that combination.

You know, I'm not the only one who enjoys eating and fellowshipping in this chapter. Some of you have your favorite resturant or cafe's that would be a good place to meet, eat, and fellowhip at. So, if you are so inclined, plan a ride, then talk with me and we'll set a date for it. Just remember that during August and September, it can get really HOT! So morning rides (breakfast) or evening rides (supper) work best this time of year.

TWISTED TATOR'S 4TH OF JULY BLOWOUT

The Brotherhood of Bikers and Ray & Bobbie Simmons threw a very good Blowout rally. The fireworks were as good as some town's that I've seen and the music, by Driving Blind, was very good. The Brotherhood set up a Peoples Choice Bike Show with several catagories, a senic ride and both off and on-bike games. This rally is a gem that not enough people know about.

Here I am resting in front of my campsite after arriving at the Blowout and setting up my camp and the New Life Riders Hospitality tent (both with help from others). Tom and Debbie Z. came up with me and very shortly (or maybe he was already there waiting for us) Johnny (Waterboy) R. arrived on his new bike a gift from the Lord to him from someone listening to God and meeting others needs.

Debbie Z. standing by the New Life Riders Hospitality tent. We, band of four, got it up in short order and were thankfull that it wasn't as hot as it normally is this time of year. What with the weather report calling for a 50/50 chance of rain all weekend we didn't know if we'd need it for shade or a dry place to sit/stand.

Tom Z. and Johnny R. are making Lemonade on Saturday morning (before it gets hot)that way it's all iced down and cold when needed.

Don and Susan P. (our CMA Area Reps) provided the music for the Sunday morning service. I have to admit that I do not understand how anyone could sleep when he starts playing his harmonica (through the sound system) in the morning. Maybe there were many rally participants that were listening from their campsites.

I delivered the message that God gave me during the days leading up to the service. Thank God I stepped back and let God speak through me. There was one salvation during the morning service and I pray that many seeds were planted.

REPUBLIC OF TEXAS BIKER RALLY 2006

Thursday morning at the 2006 ROT Rally started off very wet. This is the New Life Riders (CMA) Chapter hospitality tent. The "creek" wasn't there when we set up the tent on Tuesday night. Our hospitality tent was managed by our NLR President, Tom Zimmer, and manned/womanned by CMAer's from our chapter and others, especially Charles and Brenda Clawson (Wings of Eagles) and Art and Linda Blaise (Warriors of the Way). I really appreciate all the hard work that went into taking care of the rally attendees that was done at the NLR Hospitality Tent as well as what was happening at the Gospel Riders (Longview) and the Chariots of the Hills (Blanco/Llano/Lampassas area) hospitality tents

Thru the efforts of CMA volunteers like these, the approximately two hundred CMA volunteers processed in over 30,000 rally attendees thru the registration area. Thats a lot of work and without the help of all the CMAer's in attendance it could not have happened as effeciently as it did. Paula and I who manage the schedule for this area have been blessed to work with so many dedicated volunteers. It has made our jobs so much easier. And to top it off many CMAer's would work their shift in registration then go to a hospitality tent and work their off time there. This event really shows how much CMAer's work together to get the job done and the gospel out to those attending the rally.

This is a picture of the Sunday morning CMA service. The praise and worship group, Texas Praise provided the music and Curtis Clements, CMA Regional Evangelist brought the message. There were two people who received Christ as their Savior at the end of the service.

ROCKPOINTE CHURCH 6-18-06

On June 18th, 2006 the New Life Riders Chapter (CMA) attended the Rockpoint Church's Fathers Day, Car and Bike show as well as the morning service. We had Don & Susan Potter, NE TX Area CMA Rep's as well as six NLR chapter members in attendance. We did not win any awards in the bike show although Jay Masterson received special recognition during the service as was able to sit in a front row seat (Lazy Boy recliner) with an end table containing snacks, juice and water, Kelly was able to sit in the front row with him although she wasn't provided with the same quality of seating. Now as to what he did to deserve special seating - the church recognized the youngest father (26), the oldest father (77), the father wich the youngest child
(two weeks [also youngest father] and less than three months), and then Jay came in as the father with the most tatoo's (12).

This is the winner of the auto portion of the car/bike show and was a pretty cool looking vehicle. I'm sorry the picture of the winning bike did not come out due to the lighting conditions (the bikes were inside and the lighting was turned down low). There were lots of cool cars including 1930 model T touring sedan (which was still in original/restored condition).

Of course after the service we HAD to go eat. So off we went to the local A&W/LJS resturant for food and fellowship, we even drug along a few stragglers.

Hi Folks,

Wow, the Republic of Texas (ROT) rally is OVER! I want to thank all of you who came and worked registration or especially at the Hospitality Tent. I know Tom really appreciated any and all help that was provided. Paula and I were exhausted after the rally was over but that was expected. We were encouraged during the rally by hearing of ministry that was going on at the rally, either in the ministry tents, on the grounds or in the surrounding areas. I know of two salvations at the Sunday morning service, where Curtis Clements, our Regional Evangelist, was preaching. If you know of ministry that happened at the ROT rally please email myself (sporty@austin.rr.com) or Paula (firstlady@austin.rr.com) and let us know what happened. We are trying to get an idea of the amount of ministry that goes on at this rally.

Just so that you know - I have a blog. Corrupted by our President, Tom, I have my own blogspot. I will post my newsletter article on it as soon as I finish it. RIDING IN SUMMER - THINGS YOU NEED TO KNOW

HEAT AND HUMIDITY- A DEADLY COMBINATION

Texas seems to be entering a summer of record high temperatures, when in combination with Austin's relatively high humidity can be fatal to unprepared motorcyclists. When the ambient air temperature in the shade is 100° F., it can be well over 120° two feet above the black asphalt of a Texas highway. Compounding the heat from the sun is a pair of cylinders and exhaust pipes radiating temperatures in excess of 500° F just inches from the rider's legs. A safety conscious motorcyclist will be wearing boots, jeans, a long sleeve shirt, gloves and a helmet that restricts the body's ability to cool down through evaporation of perspiration.

Dr. Richard A. Beauchamp, a medical consultant for the Bureau of Epidemiology at the Texas Department of Health exclaimed, "High temperatures are physically tolerated by most people for short periods of time," but some form of heat—related illness may occur when people are exposed to high temperatures and humidity that produce a heat index of 95 degrees F or higher for 30 minutes or longer. At temperatures above 90° F., a motorcycle rider traveling at 60 miles per hour can lose three quarts of water every hour. If these fluids and salts, lost through perspiration, are not rapidly and continuously replaced then dehydration and electrolyte imbalances can occur. Dehydration further impairs the body's ability to maintain the proper core temperature which could lead to heat stress, heat exhaustion, heat stroke and even death.

To prevent dehydration and hyperthermia, a motorcyclist should stop every thirty minutes to consume at least a quart of water plus prepare another quart to consume while riding between breaks. Water, milk, fruit juices, as well as many of the commercially available "sport" drinks are excellent fluid replenishes, but do not drink anything containing alcohol or caffeine as they will actually dehydrate your body. You can also reduce dehydration by wearing light colored, loose fitting clothes and drenching these clothes with cool water at each thirty-minute break. This artificial perspiration can make the body feel 20 degrees cooler and reduce the loss of body fluids. At 60 miles per hour on a 90° F day a soaked shirt and jeans will be bone dry within twenty minutes. If you own a Kool Tie or similar product, it will keep your neck and shoulders cooler and prevent sunburn on this otherwise exposed skin. If you do not own a Kool Tie, a light colored neckerchief or bandanna soaked in ice water can serve the same purpose.

If you experience nausea, dizziness, headache, fatigue, rapid pulse, shortness of breath, disorientation, cold and clammy skin or hot and dry skin, you should take immediate steps to rapidly cool down the body. The best and fastest method is to get into a tub of cool water and add ice as fast as you can stand it until you core temperature has returned to normal. If a tub is not available, a cool stream or lake will help and if that is not available simply soak your clothes with ice water from your cooler.

Refer to the official National Weather Service heat index table. To calculate heat stress, find the index number in the column under current humidity ( shown on the top line) that is directly to the right of your thermometer reading (shown in the left column)

Hi Folks,

I don't know about you, but I feel like I'm burning the candle at both ends. I'm writing this in the middle of May. Phil Underwood, our Chaplain, is in the hospital (North Austin Medical Center) at this time and things aren't looking good physically for him. I know that he has made his peace with God and has been setting his affairs in order for some time. He is a child of the King and if he is promoted, I will miss him, but I will also be rejoicing for him.

Between work, meetings, events, church and hospital visits, let alone family things and all, yard maintenance, etc., I feel like I'm running a race, on foot, against a rocket! But guess what? GOD IS IN CONTROL! I realize if I try to do all this STUFF myself, I get overwhelmed. Just setting here typing this out made me realize how much ministry and training and learning and praying has been going on - yes I'm rushed sometimes but when I look at all that's been going I should be in a looney bin. But God has been sustaining me and keeping me going.

How about you? When you're rushed, do you ask for help? Seek advice from our heavenly father? Spend a little quiet time with our Lord? Pray about the situation? I don't know if I'm talking to you, or myself. But the thing is that God is our Father and we need to seek His advice about everything. I hope Phil doesn't mind - it looks like I'm writing the Chaplains article, not the Road Captains, but this is what is on my heart at this time.

Leander First Assembly of God Biker Sunday 4-30-2006

People arriving and talking on the beautiful Sunday morning of the Biker Sunday.

I want to personally thank everyone who showed up for the Biker Sunday at our church, Leander First Assembly of God. It was a beautiful day and we had local as well as a large group of CMA'ers from the Warriors of the Way come in from Killeen, TX.

There were several bikes outside as well as a couple of bikes inside the church. My bike hasn't been this clean since it was new! And a perfect showcase for Don's new (to him) custom built chopper.

Don Potter, CMA Area Rep, playing guitar & harmonica, and singing, when he got the chance, did an excellent job of entertaining and uplifting all. This was followed by an excellent message from God speaking through Don.

Some people in the church did not recognize our senior pastor when he donned biker attire, he was up on the stage and had to take the sun glasses off before some of the congregation recognized him. I'm sure he was having fun.

After the service the church invited all to the fellowship hall where the Nearly Famous Hamburgers were being served to one and all. Bikers and Food, Christians and Food, there appears to be a meeting point here.

Again I want to thank all who participated, especially the New Life Riders, the Staff and Congregation of Leander First Assembly of God, the Warriors of the Way CMA chapter, and friends and Bikers from the local area, without whom this event would not have happened.

Howard Lowe Memorial Run to the Kerrville VA Hospital

Today was overcast - that helped keep the heat down. But the people attending this Benefit Run to the VA Hospital in Kerrville were beaming! A very good showing this eleventh year and the first year without Howard Lowe, one of the original organizers of this event. He was missed.

Cadillac & Sarah, Dave G., Rick and the other MAIN Characters put together a good run this year. CONGRATULATIONS to all who were involved in organizing and putting this on as well as the Clubs who helped make it work especially the Road Guards who helped make it a safe ride for all. If I left anyone out I'm sorry.

WOW Dart Run 4-22-06

Well today was a New Life Rider (CMA) group ride. We meet at the McDonalds at FM1431 and US Hwy 183 at 0800. Six chapter members and two guests were todays road crew.

I have to give the Warriors of the Way (CMA) chapter a rousing round of applause for the excellent set up and operation of the Run as well as a nice scenic route thru the central Texas hill country. I've found a couple of more roads to add to my list of fun motorcycle roads to travel on all within an hours ride or less of my house.

Our chapter and our guests did very well, Kirk (my friend and guest for this ride) won the high score plaque (not bad for a lefty throwing from the right side); Tom, our chapter President won the low score award (a couple of koosies) and Bill won the oldest rider attending (he turns 64 next week). Not bad at all.

Hi Folks,

WHEW!!!!!! I'm writing this in the middle of April and I'm tuckered out already. Don't know what I'm going to do when things really get busy! I've moved my mother back to Texas again this month (over the first weekend no less). So I missed a couple of functions. But you all are still out there every chance you get - that is what makes working together so EASY. No one has to do it all.

I've already heard reports that the J.W. Rock Foundation fundraiser was a success with over $1,100.00 raised - final total is not in yet that I know of. Apparently every one made it through the change to Daylight Savings time. I was on the road back from Indiana so it didn't seem to have as much impact on me this time. Paula and I were in a Chaplaincy Training class on the weekend of the 8-9th so we were out of pocket again. But the chapter was represented at the Howard Lowe benefit and the TMRA State Rally, I haven't heard if anyone made it to the Austin Bunny Run on the 9th yet. So you' all don't need me to lead you - you go when you can. I LOVE IT! And at this point there are still several events yet to go in April.

It seems like I was just talking about hypothermia (your body's temperature getting too low) and now I need to remind you about Heat Stroke and Heat Exhaustion (your body overheating). These are just as dangerous as hypothermia and can sneak up on you very quickly especially when riding on a hot day.

Excessive heat can first cause heat exhaustion -- especially in people who are working or exercising outside. The symptoms include:

Dizziness or fainting
Heavy sweating
Muscle cramps
Cold or clammy skin
Headaches
Rapid heartbeat
Nausea

If you have these symptoms, get out of the heat, drink water, juice or sports drinks (unless your doctor tells you otherwise), and get medical attention.

If it isn't treated, heat exhaustion can lead to heat stroke, which is an emergency. Heat stroke also develops in people who aren't being physically active but are simply in a hot environment. The signs of heat stroke are

Rapid heartbeat
Confusion or delirium
Warm, dry skin (because the body is no longer able to sweat)
Fever of greater than 104 degrees
Severe headaches
Seizure or muscle twitching
Unconsciousness
Death

Remember, heat stroke needs immediate attention. Call 911.

April 29th - Set up Hospitality Tent at Leander Assembly of God in prep for Biker Sunday, meet at L.A.G. at 5 p.m.
April 30th - Biker Sunday at Leander First Assembly of God (bring a friend), meet at the Leander Post Office at 10:15 am to ride in together, kickstands up at 10:25 a.m.
May 2nd - TMRA2 meeting at the Moose Lodge, Austin.
May 4th - NEW LIFE RIDERS Chapter Meeting, IHOP, Austin
May 4 -7th - 10th Annual Hill Country Run, Lady Bird Johnson Park, Fredericksburg, TX (Don's doing the Service there).
May 6th - CMA Run for the Son, Antique Motorcycle Show and Swap Meet, Smithville. Meet at the Dairy Queen near the intersection of IH-35 and Hwy 79 in Round Rock at 8:45 to depart at 9:00 am.
May 5 - 7th - Brotherhood of Bikers May Day Run, Tator Park, Copperas Cove, TX
May 19 - 21st - CMA Texas State Rally, Latham Springs Baptist Encampment, Aquilla, TX.
May 20th - 5th Annual Btweener Benefit Run, Texas Wheels M/C Sponsor, Clements Boys and Girls Club, Killeen, TX

June 1 - 4th - Republic of Texas (ROT) Rally, Expo Center Grounds, Austin, TX (Hospitality Tent and Registration)
